Bernard Willington was born in Swansea, South
Wales. Painting and Art History have been life-
long passions that blend well with his love of
travel. In his early years his painting studies
featured mainly the landscapes of England
together with equestrian and related sporting
subjects. Some years elapsed before his interest
turned to figures and later to his much
acclaimed portraiture.
In the mid–eighties, while living near St Andrews,
he began his first series of golfing paintings. He
then gave up his technical career to devote his
time to publishing and painting. He is particularly
known for his golf and other sporting subjects.
The Golf courses of Scotland are an abiding
interest as they provide endless opportunities for
the portrayal, on canvas, of the sport set within
magnificent landscapes. Many of Bernard
Willington’s paintings have been published as
prints and his present series of the St Andrews’
golf courses are proving very popular with the
many golfers from all over the world who flock to
St Andrews to play the famous courses.
His commemorative American paintings have
been published for clients as limited edition
prints. Examples include the commission from
Congressional Country Club for a painting of
their course and clubhouse to celebrate their
hosting of the U.S. Senior Open in the USGA’s
Centennial year. A near neighbour at Chevy
Chase, Columbia Country Club, commissioned
a set of portraits and course paintings to
commemorate their Centennial year.
The paintings of the great Scottish golf courses
continue to grow in number and are being
complemented by a new collection of paintings
of great American and Irish courses, which are
now being published as Fine Art prints.
