To Ray Pelley, Art is about communication; a
psychic, nonverbal communication from the
collective unconscious which helps convey the
wonder of existence to the viewer and opens
an understanding of the human experience.
Inherent in Art is the human capacity to express
and experience the Sublime. In the great
Mayan cultures, artists were priests, their
creations a way of expressing the divinity in all
of nature.

He believes that artists bear a responsibility. Art
has framed our understanding of humankind
since its inception. From the cave paintings of
ancient times, through the historical arts of
Egypt, into the spiritual arts of the great religious
movements, up to the modern arts of today,
we study Art to understand what it means to be
human. Because of this, I feel it is important to
express a vision of the world that illuminates the
highest potentials and goals of humankind.
Our world is currently so highly charged with
negative information about the human
condition that I feel it is time for the artist to
onceagain express the wonders and joys of
existence.

Pelley received his degree in Fine Art from Illinois
State University. After graduation he lived for a
time in Illinois, Tennessee and Massachusetts. He
then began traveling extensively throughout
the United States. He spent time in Colorado,
Utah, Arizona and California before settling
permanently in Washington State.

He has been working as an artist in the Pacific
Northwest since 1980. His work has been
influenced by the Surrealist and Magic Realist
schools of art, and further defined by the
beauty and grandeur of the Northwest. He
has had many successful shows in galleries
throughout Washington, Oregon and California.
