Frederick Alexander Pawla (1876-1964)

Painter, muralist. Born in Wimbledon, England
on September 6, 1876. Pawla came to the
United States as a boy and at 14 enlisted in the
Navy where he achieved the rank of major
before retiring following World War One. He
studied art in Europe and was active in NYC
before moving to Santa Barbara, CA in the
1920s. He exhibited locally and maintained
a home there through the 1940s. In 1929 he
worked in San Francisco and in 1931 commissions
took him back to New York City. Pawla was a
resident of Monterey before his death at Fort
Ord, CA on December 18, 1964. His work includes
marines, coastal scenes, and landscapes.
