J. Martin (Figlinski) was born in 1970 in North
Florida where there was never a shortage of art
inspiring scenery.

As far back as he can remember, J. Martin has
always had an uncontrollable passion for art.
“I knew early on that some day I would be a
professional artist.” As a young boy in grade
school, countless hours would fly by as J. Martin
would labor over fanciful pencil sketches.

J. Martin studied art and architecture for a short
time in college, eventually leaving to pursue his
own artistic endeavors. He later began doing
architectural illustration for architects. “I loved
painting depictions of proposed buildings but
the nature of the business just didn’t offer
enough flexibility to feed my creative hunger.”

J. Martin’s love of architecture was still evident
as he began his fine art career creating
watercolor paintings of architecturally inspired
garden scenes. He eventually realized painting
with watercolor was holding him back from
getting the values and textures he wanted to
achieve in his work. Also, the years of doing
illustration was too evident in his tightly rendered
watercolors.

In an attempt to move beyond his earlier style
of painting he began experimenting with oils.
“Everything I had been wanting in my art was
falling into place. Now I was able to achieve
the light and texture I had long yearned for
and I was no longer laboring over insignificant
details.” Working in oils with expressive brush
strokes and many layers of colors allows J. Martin
to accomplish the impressionistic look that is
signature of his work today.

J. Martin still lives in North Florida, along with the
rest of his family. He spends most of his time in the
studio but manages to sneak in a few rounds of
golf here and there.
