Arthur Bernhard was born in 1939 in an old town
with an important medieval history called
Mechelen. At the age of 15 he attended the
Academy of Fine Arts in Mechelen. Arthur did
not finish studing at the academy, mainly
because at that time he wanted to see the
world. He also felt that the program was too
conservative, he wanted more. Years later
Arthur realised he was just too young and
too much of a rebel to have finished school
at that time so he went back to study at
other academies to improve various
techniques.
At first Arthur thought painting was an
evolution from figurative to abstraction.
Mondrian is a fine example, but that is not
the way Arthur works. He switches from
figurative to abstract work. The drawing is
always visible in his paintings and important
to him. Arthur believes total abstraction
does not give enough emotion to a painting.
He needs just a slight touch of the figure in
his paintings to feel emotionally attached to
the work.
